Two years ago, we predicted that the decline of checks was about to experience a slowdown for the first time in decades. And when the Federal Reserve Bank released its official numbers at the end of 2016, it turned out the decline hadn’t just slowed – it had almost stopped.

In this follow-up to our 2015 white paper series The Disappearing Check, we take a look at the reasons why check volume suddenly stabilized, and whether we can expect that to be a long-term trend, or just a temporary break from the long decline. We also examine the most pressing future threats to the remaining paper checks in the payments ecosystem, as well as project timelines for when some of those technologies might come to fruition.
