Image Skew (ID card scanning)

Image skew in ID card scanning occurs when a card is scanned at an angle rather than straight, resulting in a tilted digital image. This issue happens most often in scanning environments where documents are fed through motor-driven scanners. Image skew involving ID cards is usually caused by improper insertion of the card by the user, but occasionally happens because of a warped or damaged card.

Issues related to a skewed image in ID card scanning can include:

  1. Parts of the card being outside the scannable area of the camera
  2. Incomplete or unverifiable security features
  3. Distortion of the image if the skew causes an uneven feed
  4. Difficulty or inability to read fine details such as microprinting or 2D barcodes

Barcodes printed close to the edge of the card — in this case, between 1/8 and 1/16 inch — may become truncated at this level of skew, although other barcodes printed closer to the center of the ID may remain readable if corrected with software.
