How Much Longer Until the End of the Paper Check?

PHOENIX (March 2, 2015) BAI Payments Connect Conference – Digital Check Corp., a manufacturer of check scanners and other equipment and software for the banking industry, has released a report projecting the future of check payments in the United States today at the BAI Payments Connect conference. The document, titled The Disappearing Check – How Long Until the End?, addresses several major contributing factors to the decline in check usage, with predictions about how long the check will continue to exist in meaningful numbers.

Disappearing Check white paper coverThe report, which uses a mathematical approach to attempt accurate projections on the future of checks, is also available at www.digitalcheck.com. Highlights include:

  • Why paper check volume will decline from the current 18.6 billion to 8-10 billion over the coming decade;
  • Why some Americans continue to use checks instead of electronic payments, and which kinds of checks will be the hardest to displace;
  • Which forms of payment (including Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies) are likely or unlikely to replace checks as the payments landscape continues to evolve;
  • Why the customer’s age is not the primary determining factor in the use of paper checks, and other common myths.

John Gainer, Digital Check’s executive vice president, commented: “We feel that it’s important to open an honest discussion about the future of the check; we are not interested in producing a PR piece. The numbers may be a bit uncomfortable to some. But like it or not, the industry is evolving, and it’s our turn to evolve along with it.”

Digital Check is currently exhibiting at the BAI Payments Connect conference, at Booth 413. Also at the conference, Tom Jordan, Digital Check’s Director of Software Solutions, will co-host a session on the cost of problem images in the check clearing process at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
