Frequently Asked Questions
The following Frequently Asked Questions provides answers to many questions that are asked about Digital Check scanners. Please review the list for those topics that may be of help to you or your customers.
Question — What image formats do the scanners produce?
Answer — All three scanners are capable of scanning at 100x100, and 200x200 dpi bitonal or 16 & 256 level grayscale in Group IV TIFF, JPEG or BMP format.
Question — Can any of the scanners produce multiple images on a single pass?
Answer — Yes, our enhanced API can produce a 200x200 TIFF (front and rear image), along with the same dpi in JPEG or BMP (front and rear image) for a total of four images on a single pass.
Question — What size are the typical check images?
Answer — The sizes are typical and will vary depending upon the check's background shading and images.
100 dpi B/W: 3 to 10 Kbytes per side
200 dpi B/W: 10 to 15 Kbytes per side
100 dpi 16 level gray: 85 to 105 Kbytes per side
200 dpi 16 level gray: 125 to 300 Kbytes per side
100 dpi 256 level gray: 188 to 325 per side

Question — What additional hardware is needed to connect the scanners to a PC?
Answer — The TS300, TS350, TS350EBS and TS400(ES) models require a SCSI-2 connection. Typically, they can use one of the many Adaptec adapters such as AHA-2910, AHA-2930 or AHA-2940 for a desktop PC. The APA-1460 or APA-1480 adapters can be used for PCMCIA laptop PCs. Check out the Adaptec Info document under Service & Support, Tech Tips for more information. The TS215, TS230, and TS4120 usa a USB2.0 interface connection.
Question — What software is needed to run the scanners?
Answer — There is a free Scanlite program that is available from our web site that can test most functions in the scanner. This is not used for production applications. Our business partners offer a wide range of imaging applications that support our scanners. For other solutions where the scanner needs to integrate into a new or existing software application, the 32 bit API Toolkit is available for a OTC.
Question — What operating systems can support the scanners?
Answer —
Buic 1500: Windows 3.x, 95, 98, 2000, NT, and XP.
TS300, TS350, TS350EBS and TS400(ES): Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, and XP
TS210(E) and TS220(E): Windows 2000, XP, and Vista-32 bit.
TS215, TS230 and TS4000 series: Windows 2000, XP, and Vista-32 bit.
Question — What are the minimum and maximum document dimensions?
Answer —
| Minimum | Maximum | |
| Document Height: | 2.7"(69 mm) | 4.13" (105mm) |
| Document Length: | 2.95" (75mm) | 9.0" (230mm) |
| Document Weight: | 16 lb (60gr/sqm) | 32 lb (120gr/sqm) |
Question — What type of regular maintenance is normally required?
Answer — The document path rollers will need to be cleaned periodically to maintain the reliable feed rates. These rollers accumulate dust and debris from the check edges and surfaces. The optics area, in particular, needs to be dusted as well after cleaning the rollers. A cleaning kit is available that has pre-soaked cards that are run through the scanner cleaning of f the rollers. The procedure also recommends using a can of compressed air to blow out the optics and path areas. For the Buic 1500, TS300, TS350, TS350EBS and TS400(ES) this cleaning cycle is typically between 15,000 and 25,000 checks or every week or two depending upon the environment. The cleaning cycle on the USB attached model TS210(E), TS220(E), TS215, and TS230 will typically be between 5,000 and 8,000 checks. Contact DCC to order Cleaning Cards or the Cleaning Kit.
Question — Can the scanners support sorting, endorsing and encoding?
Answer — The TS300, TS350, TS350EBS, TS400(ES), and TS4000 series comes with a 2nd inner pocket for sorting and exceptions. The 1500 and the TS215/TS230 have a single exit pocket. All three of the scanners offer an ink jet rear endorsement as a factory installed option. We do not offer encoding within the scanners at this time.
Question — What items come with each typical scanner order?
Answer — Your shipment will consist of a check scanner (including the external power supply and entry extension tray), and a new ink jet cartridge (if the ink jet option was ordered). The USB Scanner also includes a six foot USB cable.
